On 18 February we brought three apple pies to the tent camp Heumensoord to celebrate our Burgemeester Dalesprijs. We enjoyed this delicious treat with our friends from the camp. Lekker!
The Burgemeester Dalesprijs is an annual award for individuals or groups who work remarkably to empower minorities, strive for equality between disadvantaged groups and/ or combat discrimination. The award consists of a charter and 500 euros. This year our collective shared this award with numerous groups of volunteers who tackle inequalities and discrimination through their altruistic activities for refugees in Nijmegen. The award was received by the Stip emergency shelter coordination team and thus symbolically by all the volunteers during a festive Friday evening in the city hall of Nijmegen on 8 February 2016. This award is named after Ien Dales (1931-1994), a former Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations and many years a mayor of Nijmegen. She has always stood for anti-discrimination measures and legislation.
Our collective exists under the name justPeople since October 2015 when the first asylum seekers arrived in the tent camp Heumensoord. We are an independent and informal collective of volunteers who organize and coordinate direct support and activities for and with people who come as refugees to Nijmegen. Should you have any project ideas or like to support us, don’t hesitate to contact us via email on info@justpeople.nl or sign up to our mailing list to participate in our activities.
